Hello and welcome to the The Long Island Soaring Association Web Site. We are a soaring club based at Brookhaven Calabro Airport in Shirley Long Island.
We get together every weekend to fly our sailplanes, and to teach, and learn about the sport of soaring. We also offer Power Pilot training in our Cessna C-172 at a very reasonable rate. The club, an SSA chapter, is a non-profit club, incorporated in 1955 by some soaring enthusiasts. As a non-profit club our aim is to promote the sport of soaring, and make it affordable, to all . We also strive to promote the science of airmanship, air navigation, the science of meteorology and related subjects.
Glider operations are scheduled every both weekend days, and some weekdays, weather permitting. Click on a day above to make a reservation; if it is not clickable, we are having ops that day. Please note that if ops are cancelled for any reason, you will be notified by SMS message.
We offer an Introductory Flight for those who want to experience flight in a glider and to see if the sport is for them.
Prospective members must attend two LISA monthly meetings and have completed three prepaid flights. A Membership Application should be filled out prior to the second meeting.
LISA has members who are FAA Certified Flight Instructors and volunteer their time teaching our members to fly. You don't have to have any prior flying experience to join. We're a club and not a commercial operation, so we operate on a first come, first serve basis. We enjoy introducing prospective members the joys of flying, but cannot take reservations to fly at a particular time. You may choose morning or afternoon, or both, and we will do our best to accommodate you but it is still first come, first serve.
Visitors should drive to the terminal building at Brookhaven Airport: 135 Dawn Dr., Shirley, NY 11967 and ask the airport staff to call us on the radio.
Call or text to (631) 578-8596 - we'll get back to you promptly.
